What Are the Sacraments?

The sacraments are outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace. They are powerful encounters with Christ who is at work in His Church. Through the sacraments, we receive God's grace and are strengthened to live as faithful disciples.

Baptism

The gateway to the sacraments, Baptism frees us from original sin and makes us children of God and members of the Church.

Celebrated on Sundays at 10:00 AM
Godparents must be confirmed Catholics
Registration required 2 weeks in advance
Preparation:
  • Baptismal preparation course for parents and godparents
  • Birth certificate copy required
  • Choose two Catholic godparents

First Holy Communion

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, where we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

Typically celebrated in Grade 3 (around age 8-9)
Catechism classes required for one year
First Reconciliation received before First Communion
Preparation:
  • Attend weekly catechism classes
  • Regular Sunday Mass attendance
  • Receive First Reconciliation before First Communion

Confirmation

Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace and gives us the Holy Spirit to witness to Christ.

Celebrated annually in November
Two-year preparation program
Choose a sponsor (practicing Catholic)
Preparation:
  • Attend confirmation classes (2 years)
  • Participate in retreats and service projects
  • Choose a confirmation name (saint's name)

Reconciliation

Also called Confession or Penance, this sacrament offers forgiveness for sins committed after Baptism.

Saturdays: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Also available by appointment
Children receive First Reconciliation before First Communion
Preparation:
  • Examination of conscience
  • Contrition for sins
  • Intention to avoid sin in the future

Matrimony

The sacrament of Matrimony unites a man and woman in a lifelong covenant of love.

Notify parish at least 6 months in advance
Required documents: Baptism and Confirmation certificates
Pre-Cana marriage preparation course required
Preparation:
  • Pre-Cana marriage preparation course (6 sessions)
  • FOCCUS inventory and counseling
  • Complete marriage registration forms

Holy Orders

Through Holy Orders, men are ordained as deacons, priests, and bishops to serve the Church.

Discernment process with Vocations Director
Seminary formation (4-8 years)

Preparation:
  • Prayer and spiritual direction
  • Contact Vocations Director
  • Attend discernment retreats and vocations events

Anointing of the Sick

This sacrament offers spiritual and physical strength to those who are seriously ill or facing surgery.

Available to anyone seriously ill or elderly
Call parish office for emergency anointing
Also celebrated during communal parish services
Preparation:
  • Contact parish office to request the sacrament
  • If possible, receive Reconciliation beforehand
  • Family members can arrange for the priest to visit

Each sacrament requires proper preparation to receive its grace fully.

Contact Your Parish

Reach out to your local parish office to register and express your interest in receiving a sacrament.

Attend Preparation Classes

Participate in the required formation programs, which vary by sacrament (weeks to months).

Gather Required Documents

Provide necessary certificates (Baptism, Confirmation, etc.) and complete registration forms.

Spiritual Preparation

Pray, attend Mass regularly, and if applicable, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
